Separation and Divorce can result in one of the most trying times of one's life. Unfortunately, divorce is often just one step down a potentially long path. Child custody, child support, spousal support/alimony and the distribution of property are just a few of the issues that may arise as a result of legal separation and divorce. See below for more on these and other divorce related topics.
From a procedural standpoint, the actual process of obtaining a divorce is the most simple of these issues to address. NC is a "no fault" divorce state and recognizes only two grounds for divorce: incurable insanity or separation for one year. Either spouse may file for divorce in NC, as long as one of the grounds for divorce has been met and at least one spouse has lived in this state for at least six months immediately prior to the date of filing.
