The parties in a child support matter can either agree to a support level on their own through a separation agreement or consent order, or may rely on a court to make a determination of reasonable support. NC courts consider numerous factors when determining whether child support should be paid, and if so, how much should be paid.  Per N.C.G.S. § 50-13.4, payments ordered for the support of a minor child shall be in such amount as to meet the reasonable needs of the child for health, education, and maintenance, having due regard to the estates, earnings, conditions, accustomed standard of living of the child and the parties, the child care and homemaker contributions of each party, and other facts of the particular case. Once established, the amount of child support may be modified in the future, depending on a number of factors.
